UK: BOTTLED WATER FIRMS FACE TOUGH MEASURES
Article Abstract:
Bottled water firms face tough new measures to cut the level of arsenic in mineral water. The government wants to protect the public from the risk of contracting cancer and other illnesses. The Food Standards Agency, the government's watchdog, is preparing a consultative document recommending that stricter regulations be used to reduce the risk of exposure to arsenic through drinking mineral water. The current permitted maximum level for arsenic is too high. It wants to reduce the level from 50 micrograms per litre to 10. In the UK, some 995mn litres of bottled water is drunk each year.
