UK: FEAR OVER LEVEL OF UNRECORDED CRIME
Article Abstract:
UK police officers manipulate crime figures to make detection rates look more impressive, according to a report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary released on 31 July 2000. The report estimated that the number of unrecorded crimes could be as high as 1.4mn per year, due in part to such misrepresentation. The report discovered that 24% of crimes reported across 11 police forces were not classed as offences, with one force reporting a mere 50% or so of crimes. The findings will lead to fundamental changes in the way crime statistics are collected and recorded by the police, moves which are expected to result in the crime rate increasing significantly.
