Upfront Clinton excites Chinese
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton has appeared on a popular radio programme in China. He answered questions on a wide range of issues, although it did appear that the questions had been vetted in advance. Chinese people listening to the programme were surprised about how open Clinton was about his personal interests, and generally found him very interesting. Clinton has also been involved in a round-table discussion with a physicist, a Catholic bishop, a consumer advocate, a novelist, a university president, a law professor and a researcher.

Clinton comes to China in imperial style
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable controversy surrounding the visit of President Bill Clinton to China, the first by a US leader since pro-democracy demonstrators were shot in Tiananmen Square in Jun 1989. The initial stages of the visit have been mainly pageantry, with politics being carefully avoided. For observers in the US, the success or failure of the visit will be determined by how Clinton handles China's very poor human rights record.

Christopher aims to bury Chinese ghosts
Article Abstract:
The current visit to China by US secretary of state Warren Christopher is designed to stabilise relations between the two countries. It is only the second visit which Christopher has made to China, and the first was extremely unsuccessful. Human rights will represent a considerable source of tension, but the US is now officially pursuing a policy of engagement with China.
