Venice's grand opera descends to farce
Article Abstract:
The reconstruction of La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, after a fire in 1996 has been suspended following a ruling by the Council of State that the competition for the rebuilding contract was not managed properly. The main problem is that Impregilo, the construction concern that obtained the contract, did not include in its plans a house attached to the opera house which is not part of the theatre and was not damaged by the fire. The Council of State claims that Impregilo's proposal was incomplete and should not have been considered.

Mafia trawls Venice's dark lagoon
Article Abstract:
The city of Venice, Italy, has for centuries been regarded as a centre of western civilisation and the capital of one of the most wealthy regions of Italy. However, its reputation is now declining as organised crime becomes a serious problem there. Mafia activity, including money-laundering, drugs trafficking and arms dealing, has increased dramatically in the region recently. The authorities are attempting to deal with this problem, but they cannot cope with the pace at which it is increasing.

Bickering while Venice sinks
Article Abstract:
The city of Venice, Italy, has for many years been extremely fragile, and is generally very unprepared to withstand the pressures of the modern world. Its buildings are very close together, creating a fire hazard, its canals are blocked with sludge and tankers from a nearby port have eroded the sea bed. There have been efforts to restore some key buildings, but work has been hampered by political clashes and corruption.
