What Lagerfeld knows and Galliano knows not
Article Abstract:
The latest collection shown by fashion designer John Galliano was strongly inspired by the great designers of the early years of the 20th century. The clothes were very impressive, but there was no indication that Galliano had taken into account the lifestyles of modern wearers. In contrast, the clothes shown by Alexander McQueen had a sense of reality and modernity, despite sharing the 1920s orientalist theme. The most impressive new collection was that of Karl Lagerfeld, which had a true couture feel.

In New York, make it cashmere if you can
Article Abstract:
The New York fashion collections for autumn and winter 1998 are a clear reflection of the fact that US fashion designers are unwilling to use colour or print. They seem to focus on corporate design, and avoid experimentation with colour, pattern or shape. The best collections shown in New York for autumn and winter 1998 were designed by Europeans, including Hussein Chalayan and Helmut Lang. Chalayan placed particular emphasis on cashmere, as did a number of other designers.
