Zach de Beer
Article Abstract:
Zach de Beer was the leader of South Africa's Progressive Federal Party and the Democratic Party which succeeded it, between 1987 and 1994. The goals of the Democratic Party were achieved when the country's racist constitution was replaced, and the Democratic Party was involved in negotiations over the new constitution. He was part of a wider tradition of pragmatism found among Afrikaaners, who are able to adapt to prevailing currents as a way of saving what is saveable.
