A catalog of cancer genes at the click of a mouse
Article Abstract:
The Cancer Genome Anatomy Project will put a database of all genes expressed in cancer cells on the World Wide Web. The catalog will be made possible with laser capture microdissections, which pulls specific cells out of a tumor, and a cloning/polymerase chain reaction technique to replicate RNA sequences.

In industry, extremophiles begin to make their mark
Article Abstract:
Biotechnology firms are gaining interest in extremophiles. Taq polymerase, the enzyme taken from a microbe that lives in a Yellowtone thermal pool, is the best-known example. Genencor Intnl has introduced a detergent additive called cellulase 103, from a microbe that thrives in an alkaline lake.
