Desertification: people problem
Article Abstract:
Desertification is induced by human activity and requires human skills and collaboration to reverse it. Land degradation can be contained by improving the capacity of land to withstand droughts. Governments can assist in desertification control by strengthening environmental policy and funding research efforts. Non-governmental organizations can influence the decision making process and foster cooperation towards sustainable development. However, desertification control measures must be socially, economically and culturally acceptable to the people of drought-stricken areas.

Creeping desert casts shadow over Mexico
Article Abstract:
The threat of desertification in Mexico has impelled the education of the local population in the utility of technology to fight the menace. Desertification is caused by soil erosion, over-grazing, logging, and the loss of green cover. However, the prime factors encouraging desertification are poverty and lack of education. Pilot projects have been designed to motivate and educate the people to fight the spreading desert. These projects advocate the trial and error method, and gradually incorporate the best program into a national effort to control desertification.

All deserts are not alike
Article Abstract:
Land degradation and desertification are two distinct though related ecological processes that impel different desert like conditions. Desertification is a continuous process of land degradation which gradually converts the green ecosystem into a desert. Land degradation can be tackled by moderately priced strategies while desertification can only be fought by sophisticated technologies. However, desertification reaches a high point when famine occur, although drought and famine are again two diverse phenomena.
