Duma holds down science budget: Russia
Article Abstract:
Lobbying by a deputy prime minister and the threat of a strike got the Russian Duma to raise 1997 spending to 2.9% of the overall budget, still an inadequate total. The Russian Academy of Science's share was raised from 12% to 15%, while the Russian Federation for Basic Research's share was reduced.

Funding crisis provokes street protests
Article Abstract:
Russian researchers protested in the streets in Feb 1996. They were trying to bring cuts in research funding at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) to public attention. The demonstrators say the crisis has halted most research at RAS institutes. They plan further protests.

Science law advances despite criticism

The science subcommittee of Russia's Duma has merged three competing science laws into one, which stands a chance of passing despite much criticism. Issues of contention include the status of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the rights of individual researchers.
