The Hereditary Susceptibility Working Group and the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications of Human Genome Research Working Group joined to discuss employment discrimination based on genetic information. State legislation, recent federal initiatives and policy implications are reviewed.

Genetic discrimination and health insurance: an urgent need for reform

Discrimination in health insurance coverage based on genetic information has devastating consequences for those discriminated against. It also has serious effects on the progress of genetic research. State and federal initiatives to guard against discrimination are necessary.
