Nevada test site on track
Article Abstract:
Construction of the WesTrack experimental road test facility in Nevada started in September 1995. The test facility is a part of the Federal Highway Administration's 'Accelerated Field Test of Performance-Related Specifications for Hot-Mix Asphalt Construction.' Under the project, pavement performance will be examined to study the impact of various asphalt contents and aggregate gradation. Performance prediction models included in the Superpave mix design and analysis procedures will also be validated.

Spotlight on steel moment frames
Article Abstract:
The 1994 earthquake in Northridge, CA, proved that moment-resisting steel frames are not that damage-resistant. Steel structural engineers have since focused on modifying the seismic design of such connections. Building codes should make sure that inelastic deformation processes are diverted away from the connections, since these are not isolated structural elements. Beams must be designed in such a way that limited force is transmitted to the joints during seismic energy dissipation.

Girder study to unlock curved steel secrets
Article Abstract:
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is conducting a $2.5 million research project on the properties and behavior of curved steel girders in MacLean, VA. The study may alter the manner in which bridges are built and the costs entailed to construct them. About 25% of all steel bridges built in the 1990s have curved girders, which cost up to 25% more than straight girders. The FHWA wants to explore the use of fewer materials more efficiently in bridge design.
