New environmental institute needed to focus on emerging issues
Article Abstract:
Increasing environmental degradation continually casts a dark cloud of pessimistic gloom over Africa, Central and South America and other environmentally depleted parts of the world. Currently, the nation is in dire need of a new environmental institute dedicated entirely to the study of environmental sciences and the solving of environmental challenges presented by the millenium. This institution should not be swayed by politics, nor should it be defined by disciplinary boundaries. Furthermore, it should focus on far-reaching, as well as existing environmental issues.

U.S. science policy requires attention
Article Abstract:
The government is encouraged to adopt new measures to address the increasing global environmental degradation. Strong leadership and coordination of federal environmental programs must be manifested in the program, as well as a continuous updated, peer-reviewed process of science assessment and an increased investment in environmental research programs. Furthermore, America's citizens must secure improved access to information, including more funding for information management and data collection and heightened quality control for databases.

Federal funding for environmental research
Article Abstract:
Federal funding of environmental research is allocated through seven domestic agencies, but the research is not coordinated. The seven agencies, which include the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, are spending about $2.4 billion in FY 1992. The funding is concentrated in research of the physical environment and global change. An account of environmental research programs in each of the seven domestic agencies is given.
