Phage transfer: a new player turns up in cholera infection
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that Vibrio cholerae bacteria become virulent through an infection by a virus that inserts genes into the bacteria. The genes code for deadly symptoms such as diarrhea. The research may change the course of vaccine development and investigations into the bacteria's life cycle and evolution.

Hughes grants brighten outlook for elite researchers: former Soviet bloc

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute became the latest western group to support research in the former Soviet bloc by awarding 90 scholarship of $25,000-$35,000/year to budget-strapped Eastern European scientists. The state of research funding in the various countries is discussed.
