Article Abstract:
A blue-ribbon panel has recommended that the DOE laboratories concentrate on basic research rather on the Clinton administration's priorities of helping industry. The panel stressed the need to streamline lab operations, but this change will not produce the large budget cuts that DOE wants.

Physicists are elated with White House backing of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), a $1.3 billion project seen as a good replacement for the Advanced Neutron Source facility that was cancelled in 1995. The politics of getting SNS approved, and its technical advantages, are analyzed.
