Surprise! A fundus factory for taxol?
Article Abstract:
Plant pathologist Gary Strobel and chemist Andrea Stierle discovered that a fungus growing in the bark of a Montana yew tree produces the cancer-fighting drug taxol, even when the fungus is removed from the tree. The discovery could lead to methods of producing the drug inexpensively.

Germany puts money on peer review

The German government will begin a new system of research funding in 1998 that will require scientists to compete for dwindling funds. About 5% of the national research centers' $1.8 billion budget for 1998 will be set aside in a new 'Strategy Fund' for peer-reviewed research.
