Taking a structured approach to understanding proteins
Article Abstract:
Growing knowledge about the vast number of genes that code for proteins has revealed that resolving the structure of every known protein is a daunting task. Biologists are undertaking a project to determine the structure of a core set of proteins that are representative of all protein types.

A new look at maternal guidance: parents pass on more than genes to their offspring, and these nongenetic contributions can have profound ecological and evolutionary implications
Article Abstract:
Biologists are beginning to study non-genetic maternal contributions to offspring, which had previously been observed only anecdotally. By altering gene- regulating proteins, nutrients or incubation temperatures, mothers can alter the number, size and even the sex of their eggs or seeds.
