The universe shows its age
Article Abstract:
One of the most nagging problems in astronomy appears to be abating. For years, measured expansion rates for the universe were so fast that they implied an age billions of years younger than the oldest stars. Data from the Hubble Space Telescope is helping scientists better determine star distances.

High energy x-ray scattering is revealing data on properties that have traditionally been examined with neutron beams. The high quality x-rays produced by third generation synchrotron sources are being used in studies of magnetism and disordered materials.
