Viewing velvet worms in amber
Article Abstract:
Amber-preserved fossils help bridge the gap between living velvet worms, land dwellers from the Southern Hemisphere and the previously known fossil velvet worms, Northern sea-dwellers. Onychophorans from the Baltics and the Dominican Republic, 40 and 20 million years old, are described.

Leptin: a trigger to puberty?
Article Abstract:
Endocrinologist Jeffrey Flier presented research indicating that the protein leptin helps regulate the production of sex hormones and may even trigger the beginning of puberty. The finding could explain the observed connection between body fat content and sexual behavior and fertility.

Cocaine wreaks subtle damage on developing brains
Article Abstract:
Studies on schoolchildren exposed to cocaine during fetal development indicate that the drug has subtle effects on brain development that affect behavior. Cocaine-exposed children have problems focusing attention and blocking out distractions.
