Bumper stickers and car signs: ideology and identity
Article Abstract:
Bumper stickers and car signs, through the use of symbols and statements, are an alternative means of self-expression in a mass-media dominated environment. A study of 2160 vehicles in 8 parking lots in the City of Riverside, California, confirmed the hypothesis that the poorer sections of society use this medium of expression more frequently to make statements of identity and ideology, and that this medium is not used by the affluent because they have better access to traditional media. Bumper stickers and car signs are indicators of what the average citizen considers important.

Enduring image of war: myth and ideology in a Newsweek cover
Article Abstract:
A Newsweek cover photograph of a battered face on a TV screen, published during the Persian Gulf War, reflects three important mythological American themes. The cost of war in human terms, the changing role of media, and the ideological preparation for war are infused in this single photograph. The photograph visually offers a complex political message to the nation to prepare for war through the American myth of captivity narrative. It is published in a context through which the American people understand their war with Iraq.

"Who watches the Watchmen?": Ideology and "real world" superheroes
Article Abstract:
Comic book heroes like the Superman, Batman and Watchmen are depicted as 'good guys' who fight crime in the name of perfect justice, and are answerable to no one but themselves. They are so popular as, by placing them on pedestals as champions of justice and perfection, their creators positioned them outside the realm of ideology, the controlling force of the State, and thus, these superheroes are outside the 'real world', not influenced by politics, racism, education, sexism or intolerance.
