Child abuse by mothers' boyfriends: why the overrepresentation?

Article Abstract:

A study which examined the factors for possible overrepresentation in research of single mothers' boyfriends' roles in child abuse is presented. Five conditions were established as possible causes for overrepresentation. These are their gender, location of boyfriends' child care in single parent families, absence of genetic relationship between mothers' boyfriends and their partners' children, their perceived illegitimacy as caregivers and family members and their rivalry for attention with their partners' children. Limitations due to subject participation and sampling clouded the findings.

Physically abusive parents and the 16-PF: a preliminary psychological typology

Article Abstract:

The distinctive character traits and personality features of physically abusive parents were analyzed in a study to define the personalities of child abusive parents. Cluster analysis was used to typify the personality traits of 81 abusive parents, as identified by the 16-PF personality test. A typology of five different personality types was developed, taking into account dominant personality traits such as competence and other factors such as education, age, number of children and whether both parents were involved in a childhood history of abuse.
