Research indicates that HIV patients have a more negative body image than those who have not tested positive for HIV, but have a greater desire for physical touch than their non-HIV counterparts. The article focuses on the psychological link between perceived contamination and deprivation of touch, with touch often being seen as synonymous with comfort and social acceptance.

Love and intimacy in relationship risk management: HIV positive people and their sexual partners
Article Abstract:
Issues regarding the intimate relationships of HIV positive people are discussed. Love and intimacy are the key factors in relationship survival, with unprotected sex signalling the intimate, secure relationship. The intimate relationship is a prime source of everyday risk management and its defense may exact a high cost in the time of sexual epidemic.

Pumping iron: compliance with chelation therapy among young people who have thalassemia major

The response of children with thalassemia major to daily chelation therapy is discussed, with the burden of compliance emerging as the main theme in these childrens' narratives of their illness. The child also has to reconcile the consequences of non-compliance within the broader experience of growing up and maintaining a positive self-image
