Long-term trends in cigarette smoking among young U.S. adults
Article Abstract:
Surveys on tobacco use in the US reveal varying trends in smoking prevalence among young adults aged 20-24. Retrospective review of national probability test shows that young women who are high school drop-outs have reached smoking rates higher than that of young men. The results indicate that surveillance, research, and public health programs are needed to focus on the rapid increase in smoking among young women.

A two-wave panel of women smokers in 12 public health centers is used to test the accuracy of an instrument, presented in 1994, to assess the precontemplative stage. The results indicate that the predictions are reliable. The questionnaire helps assess the readiness for behavioral change and the degree of motivation.
