Patch choice as a function of procurement cost and encounter rate
Article Abstract:
A laboratory experiment showed the effects of patch encounter rate on meal patterns and patch choice of foraging rats using two patch types at varying procurement costs that were encountered in a random sequential pattern. It was affirmed that rats fed from the low-cost patch on almost 100% of encounters and exploited the high-cost patch at a decreasing rate with the increasing cost of procurement. It was found that the rats kept away from high-cost patches even when low-cost patches became rare and, instead, reduced frequency and increased the size of meals to reduce foraging costs.

Effects of reinforcement rate and delay on the acquisition of lever pressing by rats
Article Abstract:
Research results on the acquisition of lever pressing, in the absence of response shaping, among rats under different rates and unsignaled delays of reinforcement are presented. It was revealed that reinforcement rates varied more in different reinforcement schedules than in different delay intervals. It was also shown that highly intermittent schedules increase response rates and consistent immediate reinforcement schedules lower reinforcement rates. The immediate delivery of reinforcement at varied rates produce the same effect as the acquisition and maintenance of new responses.
