Pathological gamblers and alcoholics: do they share the same addictions?
Article Abstract:
There is no major cross over between alcoholics and habitual gamblers, and drinking and gambling are independent addictions. Habitual gamblers and members of Gamblers Anonymous score above the cutoff level in the South Oakes Gambling Screen while Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) members score below the cutoff. AA members score above the cutoff in the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory while gamblers score below the cutoff.

Selective processing of visual alcohol cues in abstinent alcoholics: An approach-avoidance conflict?
Article Abstract:
A study aimed to test the hypothesis that emotional information can result in both approach and avoidance processes. Alcoholics in the study showed slower reaction times (RTs) to targets invalidly cued by alcohol, although this was only apparent in short cue-target intervals. Alcohol words produced faster RTs in the long cue-target interval, on invalidly cued targets.

Older and younger male alcoholics in outpatient treatment
Article Abstract:
The extent to which older alcoholics form a distinct group within the population drinking population is assessed, based on a comparison with alcoholics in outpatient treatment of over 50 years of age with those from the modal age group. Results suggest that problems with alcohol are not as severe among older alcoholics, and they did not report more health problems.
