Prosocial coping and substance use during pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Coping has emotional, social and cognitive elements, as gleaned from structured interviews of pregnant inner-city residents. The Intention-Based Coping Inventory-Revised measure represents coping's cognitive component, the Communication Effectiveness Scale-Observer Version represents the social component, while self-reported negative affect and depressive symptoms, and directly observed warmth represent the emotional component. Three coping factors, namely, prosocial, antisocial and asocial, that distinguish between users and nonusers were gleaned from factor analysis.

Correlates of occasional cigarette and marijuana use: Are teens harm reducing?
Article Abstract:
The characteristics distinguishing occasional and heavy cigarette use and marijuana use amongst US high school seniors have been analyzed using data from the 1994 Monitoring the Future study. It was found that high school seniors who occasionally smoked cigarettes or marijuana had stronger beliefs about possible harm of regular use, compared to heavy users. The results raise the possibility that decreasing heavy cigarette and marijuana use could be achieved by increasing the perceived risk of heavy use.
