The feminization of the German Democratic Republic in political cartoons 1989 - 90
Article Abstract:
Political cartoonists have followed a trend of depicting East Germany as a female and West Germany as a male following their reunification. The genderfication symbolizes the political ideology of unification, comparing the union of east and west to marriage. East Germany is commonly depicted as a woman due to its economic dependence and its foreseen loss of identity. Symbolizing the east-west union through genderfication should not be viewed as a sexist attitude towards East Germany, but as a representation of the union which affirms East Germany's natural dependence on the West.

Star Wars, 'Star Wars,' and American political culture
Article Abstract:
Analysis of George Lucas's films 'Star Wars,' 'The Return of the Jedi' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' expose the weakness in the claims of Strategic Defense Initiative. Luke's emergence from a hesitant adolescent into Jedi knighthood reflects the growth of the US as a country. Luke learns of the benefits of peace, love and faith, which the Americans consider inferior to military domination and power.
