The polls-trends: genetic testing, engineering, and therapy: awareness and attitudes
Article Abstract:
The public debate on genetics and the controversy between nature and nurture can be traced back to the 18th century with the writings of Rousseau. The public has since increased its knowledge on genetics and genetic engineering. Various statistics from Gallup questions by Cantril and Strunk and from the Public Opinion Quarterly on public opinions on issues related to genetic engineering were presented. Among the topics/questions asked were attitudes towards genetic engineering, concerns about privacy, nature versus nurture and cloning.

The polls: poll trends: AIDS - an update
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the results of 116 public-opinion surveys on AIDS indicated that several responses had changed between Jan 1987 and Jul 1992. For example, the public had become more informed about AIDS. Some 50% of people who were surveyed in the mid-1980s believed that AIDS could be transmitted through casual contact, compared to 24% in 1990. The other areas in which public opinion had changed included the tracing of sexual contacts, the regulation of AIDS-related issues and attitudes toward AIDS patients.

Context effects on responses to questions about AIDS
Article Abstract:
Two surveys on public AIDS awareness suggested that more people were becoming misinformed about AIDS transmission. Some 28.9% of the respondents to an Oct 1988 survey believed that blood donation could lead to AIDS, compared to 43.5% in Nov 1989. One reason for the differences in responses could have been the way in which the survey questions were asked, specifically, the order in which they were asked. The context of the question on blood donation affected people's responses to the question.
