U.S. immigration authorities and border communities
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the treatment of Latinos by US immigration authorities in two border communities, namely South Tucson, AR, and Lower Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. A random selection of 166 South Tucson and 185 South Texas households was made. Based on the findings, 18.1% of all South Tucson households and 10.2% of South Texas households are mistreated by immigration authorities. The most common forms of mistreatment are racial slurs, abusive language and the denial of legal rights. The study implies that the protection of the legal rights of immigrants is not prioritized by immigration officials.

Voices from around the country call for INS detention reform
Article Abstract:
People of the Golden Vision has begun to unearth some hidden facts surrounding the detention of immigrants in the US. Founded in Aug. 1993, the coalition is an interfaith grassroots movement to seek the release of some 300 Chinese nationals which have been detained in Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) detention centers since Jun. 1993. The group has found out that detaining immigrants has become lucrative for the INS, the county or the facility detaining them. Possessing lesser rights than criminals, detained immigrants have to suffer sparse living conditions.

Reforming an abusive immigration process
Article Abstract:
The Immigration and Naturalization Service should introduce reforms to their immigration and deportation policies. It is believed that the new powers of the INS go against the interests of human rights. Political refugees are deported to their native countries without regard for these refugees' pleas for humanitarian aid. INS policy has remained aversive to the entry of new immigrants despite the major contributions of these immigrants to US economic success.
