Whatever happened to the graffiti art movement?
Article Abstract:
Graffiti art was a product of the 1970s New York City hip-hop subculture which died out in the 1980s after its assimilation into mainstream culture. Originating with teenagers spray-painting logos on subway cars and stations, it developed into muralism as production increased in size and volume, and received considerable media attention as an art form. Subway graffiti became impractical as an art form in the stricter environs of the 1980s and with the invention of cleaning solvents. The graffiti art form lost its relevance once it was taken away from its inner-city subculture to the art gallery.

'Joy in repetition'?: Prince's 'Graffiti Bridge' and 'Sign o' the Times' as sequels to 'Purple Rain.'
Article Abstract:
Prince's 1987 film 'Sign o' the Times' mainly conveyed the exhilarating side of this performer's nature. In contrast, his 1990 film 'Graffiti Bridge' showed him in a less positive light. The former film shows Prince at his best, leading a very powerful band through a wide range of music and conveying his main interests: sex, love, rock n' roll and God. With its energy and positiveness, this film seems to be a seamless sequel to 'Purple Rain,' Prince's first film, which was made in 1984. It is easy to dismiss 'Graffiti Bridge,' but it must be seen as an alternative sequel to 'Purple Rain.'
