A sporting chance
Article Abstract:
The government in the Uk has been attempting to provide extra resources for high level sport over the past two years, but its attempts have been criticised for divorcing schools and high level sport from the rest of the Sport for All concept, not encouraging local authorities and destroying Regional Councils for Sport and Recreation. Minister for sport, Iain Sproat, favours a single site academy for sport, but a survey of 600 respondents showed that 60% favour a network.

Sights on sport
Article Abstract:
The UK government's new White Paper on promoting sporting excellence in schools and clubs has been particularly welcomed by those involved in sports because it has received the personal support of prime minister John Major. However, it has already been the subject of some criticism. It fails to deal with adult participation in sport, places too much emphasis on team games, places an excessive burden on schools and provides insufficient government funding.

Team play
Article Abstract:
UK local authorities, voluntary groups and commercial enterprises should cooperate in the provision of child play facilities. Current policies are inadequate. The National Children's Play and Recreation Unit has encouraged partnerships between local authorities and voluntary groups through Children Today programmes. From May 1990 to October 1992 three cooperative ventures were established in Leicestershire, Devon and the North West of England.
