'Business budget' hits casino industry
Article Abstract:
Casino businesses are suffering because they are obliged to pay an extra 6.7% in gambling duty. Only casinos in London, England, have been impacted by the surprise tax policy. The industry feels cheated because it has worked hard to please the government since the Labour party was elected into office in May 1997. The British Casino Association hopes to persuade the government to implement changes in gaming law.

The IBC Legal Studies and Services conference held in Dec 1994 looked at profitable leisure opportunities. Issues covered included sport stadia, out of town leisure, the environment, tourism and the National Lottery. Many speakers emphasised that partnership is the way forward for the leisure industry, but that any partnership must be based on imagination and lateral thinking.

Time to be merry
Article Abstract:
In June 1993 a White Paper proposing changes to the current licensing laws was prepared by BISL (Business in Sport and Leisure). Changes would create a more flexible licensing system and clear up present anomalies in the law. It is hoped that time will be made in Parliament for a such a bill.
