CCT: learning from experience
Article Abstract:
Compulsory competitive tendering for sport and leisure management has not often led to cost savings for local authorities, but it has certainly improved standards of leisure management. Managers are now more informed and more effective, but there are still a number of steps to be taken before the highest possible standards of professional performance are reached. Local authorities should consider repackaging contracts, incorporating the good practice recommended by the Sports Council and possible shifting the non-statutory activities to the client team.

New Year resolutions
Article Abstract:
There is strong evidence that managers, both in the leisure industry and in other industries, are facing increasing pressure to work long hours. This can have a negative impact on their health and their family life. They should view the advent of 1996 as an opportunity to consider whether they should continue working in this way. Other challenges facing them as the new year beings include making a contribution to the health of local people, improving service standards and acting to boost local democracy.
