Academy backs science in Endangered Species Act
Article Abstract:
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced in May 1995 the results of a 2 1/2-yr. study that the basic scientific premises upon which the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) were based are scientifically sound. The NAS made the announcement in the midst of ongoing discussions in Congress on ESA reauthorization. Property rights advocates had been hoping that the academy report would support moves to scale back the ESA, but were instead dismayed when the report justified more protection for wildlife. House Speaker Newt Gingrich tried to pacify both sides of the reauthorization debate by saying that Congress will work towards a compromise position.

Lost Mars mission thrusts Russian space science further into crisis
Article Abstract:
The loss of Mars 96 spacecraft, the possible failure of the Proton launch system and problems with Russian participation in the international space station have brought Russia's space programme to a point of crisis. Scientists at the Russian space research institute (IKI) are trying to revive the Mars mission. International investigators are determined to work with IKI in spite of the Mars 96 loss and feel that the Russian space programme will survive the disaster. They also feel that the Russian space program's quality should not be considered inferior, despite financial problems.
