Air entrapment in coatings by way of a tip-streaming meniscus
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to show that coating flows at supercritical speeds produce tip-streaming air filaments. This research involved an experimental investigation of air entrapment in high-speed coating operations. At the onset of air entrainment, the critical capillary number is around 2.1 for the glycerine-air case detailed in this research. There is some evidence to indicate that the extended meniscus is not always in contact with the fibre. This appears to be the first time that a link between air entrainment in coating operations and tip-streaming events has been made.

Evidence of a transition temperature for the optimum deposition of grafted monolayer coatings
Article Abstract:
Film coatings with a single layer of molecules can be deposited with consistent quality for temperatures above a certain critical value, which is near ambient temperature. This threshold temperature varies linearly with the length of the silane molecule chains, and is similar to the phase triple point of Langmuir monolayers. The relationship of temperature to chain length suggests that after physisorption onto the surface but before chemical grafting, a lateral rearrangement takes place within the monolayer.

The influence of natural mineral coatings on feldspar weathering
Article Abstract:
The rate of weathering of feldspar, an abundant mineral, requires quantification to accurately estimate carbon dioxide fluxes over geological timescales. Weathered albite surfaces are sodium and aluminium depleted, and microtopography images were found to be consistent with dissolution occurring at specific surface sites.
