Counting mandrills: each summer these nomadic monkeys invade Lope in huge gangs
Article Abstract:
A field biologist researching forest dynamics in the Lope Reserve in Gabon describes observing the yearly return of the nomadic mandrills to the rain forest reserve. The researchers must work in pairs to accurately count the numbers of males, females and infants in the mandrill groups. At one crossing through a narrow gallery the researchers counted and videotaped 604 mandrills in a crossing that lasted half an hour.
