Does science leave room for soul?
Article Abstract:
Bryan Appleyard's attack on science and rationality in his book 'Understanding the Present' has the troubling potential of persuading people that the world would be a happier place if science and its subversive tendencies had less influence. Appleyard argues that science's emphasis on reason has weakened traditional beliefs and thus undermined humanity's spiritual basis. Moreover, Appleyard's pessimistic view of science may be used to justify government cutbacks in research funding in Britain and elsewhere.

Inscribed matter as an energy-efficient means of communication with an extraterrestrial civilization
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to show that if haste is unimportant, sending messages inscribed on some material can be strikingly more energy efficient than communicating by electromagnetic waves. It is also suggested that our initial contact with extraterrestrial civilizations may be more likely to occur through physical artefacts, essentially messages in a bottle, than via electromagnetic communication.
