'Mars mania' and the right to celebrate
Article Abstract:
A NASA report showing evidence of life on Mars has resulted in multiple reactions from the public. The pictures show the presence of fossil remains of the past Martian biota. Scientists from various disciplines feel that the report is based on meagre evidence and hence should not be given much importance. Scientists should be more careful in presenting new scientific results as most of the research is funded by the public which is keen to learn and explore.

A lively debate
Article Abstract:
Science delegates at the Mar 1997 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Houston, Texas, reviewed recent evidence of life on Mars to evaluate current scientific opinion. Some believe nanofossils found on the 4.5-billion-year-old orthopyroxenite rock ALH84001 may have originated from organic molecular processes. Other issues including the possible origin of magnetite crystals found in carbonates were also discussed.

Opening a martian can of worms?
Article Abstract:
A study supporting the possibility of life on mars lacks substantial evidence. The remnants of bacteria-like organisms found in the meteorite ALH84001 prove the presence of primitive life on early Mars. However, the origin of the meteorite is uncertain. The large patches of carbonate deposits within the meteorite indicate a martian origin. The microfossils are too small to be interpreted as cells.
