Nestmate discrimination and competition in incipient colonies of fire ants
Article Abstract:
The development of nestmate discrimination by Solenopsis invicta queen and worker fire ants in incipient colonies was studied. Ants were observed from the colony-establishment phase until soon after the first worker ants (called minims) emerged from larvae. It was observed that both worker and queen ants exhibit nestmate discrimination from the earliest stages of colony activity. The first worker ants in these colonies almost always killed non-nestmate worker ants from mature colonies.

Entrainment of the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in wood ants by temperature
Article Abstract:
A study exploring the effectsof entrainment of the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in wood ants by temperature was conducted. There were three conditions; namely, constant darkness, constant light and 24 hour light cycles. Results indicate an increasein locomotor activity for the condition of darkness befor an onset of warmth, abimodal activity level for 24 hour light cycles and a drastic reduction of activity under constant light conditions.

Bayesian analysis of linear dominance hierarchies
Article Abstract:
The Bayesian approaches, based on the method of paired comparisons, for determining ranks and for estimating relationships between dominance ability and other attributes are illustrated. Stimulations show that Bayesian inferences are more robust to deviations from the assumptions that are the results of nonparametric methods.
