The conserved kinetochore protein shugoshin protects centromeric cohesion during meiosis
Article Abstract:
The conserved kinetochore kinase Bub1 is required for the centromeric localization of both mitotic and meiotic shugoshins, which suggests that Bub1 might regulate loading and/or maintenance of shugoshin at kinetochores. A new model for considering the evolution of meiosis and an integrated understanding of eukaryotic chromosome segregation is provided.

Shugoshin collaborates with protein phosphatase 2A to protect cohesion
Article Abstract:
A specific subtype of serine/threonine protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) associating with human shugoshin is presented. Purified shugoshin complex has an ability to reverse the phosphorylation of cohesion in vitro suggesting that dephosphorylation of cohesion is the mechanism of protection at centromeres.

Cohesin relocation from sites of chromosomal loading to places of convergent transcription
Article Abstract:
A high resolution analysis of cohesin association along budding yeast chromosomes III-IV is performed. The findings state that the sites of cohesin binding and sister chromatid cohesion, a key architectural feature of mitotic chromosomes, display surprising flexibility.
