Transcribing diabetes
Article Abstract:
Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, and develops before the age of 25. MODY is due to an insulin secretion impairment rather than an impairment in insulin action. Studies reveal that mutations at chromosomes 20q11.2-q13.1, 7p13 and 12q24 are responsible for MODY1, -2 and -3. The genes mutated in MODY3 and MODY1 encode hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-1-alpha and HNF-4-alpha.

Tackling common disease
Article Abstract:
Research examining degrees to which defective variants of genes are responsible for predispositions to disease in people is presented. Particular attention is given to a critical account of identifications of genes associated with disease and to accompanying treatments discovered.

Localization of type 1 diabetes susceptibility to the MHC class I genes HLA-B and HLA-A
Article Abstract:
The localization of the type 1 diabetes susceptibility to the HLA-B and HLA-A genes belonging to class I of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is discussed. The MHC-class-I-mediated events contribute to the aetiology of type 1 diabetes.
