Use of tree stumps as roosts by the western long-eared bat
Article Abstract:
Researchers discovered that western long-eared bats roost in stumps in clear cut forest areas. This is the first report of this activity. The researchers located 19 roosts in three of 11 clearcuts searched in British Columbia. The bats had a preference for south-west facing cavities and chose stumps with larger diameters. The choice of stumps as roost sites increases the risk from terrestrial predators, but also generates thermoregulatory gains, as the lack of canopy cover increases roost temperatures. This advantage is particularly valuable to reproductive females.

Selection of gambel oak roosts by southwestern myotis in Ponderosa pine-dominated forest, Northern Arizona
Article Abstract:
The Akaike's Information Criteria was used to evaluate a priori hypotheses about south western Myotis maternity roost selection in northern Arizona, USA. Protection and recruitment of large Gambel oak trees is recommended to ensure that roosts remain available for southwestern myotis.

Fine-scale analysis of Mount Graham red squirrel habitat following disturbance
Article Abstract:
The normal habitat of the endangered Mount Graham red squirrel was analyzed through high-resolution satellite imagery following its disturbance through fire and insect outbreaks. Creation of such habitat is necessary for their conservation.
