A p-loop motif and two basic regions in the regulatory protein GvpD are important for the repression of gas vesicle formation in the archaeon Haloferax mediterranei
Article Abstract:
Two basic regions and a p-loop motif in the regulatory protein GvpD have been found to be important for gas vesicle formation repression in the archaeon Haloferax mediterranei. The protein seems to prevent the BvpE-mediated gvpA promoter activation.

Use of a halobacterial bgaH reporter gene to analyse the regulation of gene expression in halophilic archaea
Article Abstract:
A halobacterial bgaH reporter gene has been used to analyze regulation of gene expression in halophilic archaea. Genes encoding gas vesicles were used to study regulation. Haloferax volcanii transformants were produced containing fusions between the various gvpA promoter regions and the bgaH reading frame.

Influence of salt on the transcription of the gas-vesicle genes of Haloferax mediterranei and identification of the endogenous transcriptional activator gene
Article Abstract:
Transcription of halobacterial gas-vesicle genes in the mc-vac region of Haloferax mediterranei occurs at different levels in 25% and 15% salt culture. Transcription occurs from 2 promoters that are located in front of mc-gvpA and mc-gvpD. Transcripts from the mc-gvpD appear in late exponential and stationary phases, and in larger amounts in the 25% salt medium. The mc-gvpA mRNA leads to mc-gvpACNO mRNAs formation and thus gas-vesicle synthesis. Results also show that mc-gvpE is an activator for mc-gvpA and mc-gvpD promoters as both are inactive in the absence of the former.
