Citrate synthase and 2-methylcitrate synthase: structural, functional and evolutionary relationships
Article Abstract:
The previously identified second citrate synthase gene of Escherichia coli is actually a 2-methylcitrate synthase with some citrate synthase activity. 2-Methylcitrate synthase catalizes the formation of 2-methylcitrate from propionyl-Co-A and enables E. coli to utilize propionate as a carbon source. The evolutionary relationship between 2-Methylcitrate synthase and citrate synthase is investigated by comparing the two with citrate synthases from other organisms.

2-Oxoacid dehydrogenase multienzyme complexes in the halophilic Archaea?: gene sequences and protein structural predictions
Article Abstract:
Gene sequences have been studied in 2-oxoacid dehydrogenase multienzyme complexes in the halophilic Archaea and protein structural predictions have been made. No PDHC activity had been found in the Archaea, although DHLipDH was known to be in the extremely halophilic Archaea. An operon having the DHLipDH gene in the halophilic archaeon Haloferax volcanii has been found and sequenced. Evolutionary and metabolic consequences are discussed.

Use of a packed-column bioreactor for isolation of diverse protease-producing bacteria from Antarctic soil
Article Abstract:
This article describes isolation of protease producing bacteria from Antarctic soil using a packed column in a bioreactor mimicking natural ecosystems. Results show isolation of 75 aerobic heterotrophs from such a system fed with a casein-containing medium at 10 C. Phenotypic analyses show they are mainly psychrotrophs belonging to diverse groups of bacteria.
