Ligand-induced asymmetry in histidine sensor kinase complex regulates quorum sensing
Article Abstract:
The crystal structures of the isolated periplasmic domain of LuxQ (Lux[Q.sub.p] and of LuxP[Q.sub.p] polypeptides found in marine bacterium Vibrio harveyi bound to autoinducer-2 (AI-2) are described. Combined X-ray crystallographic and functional studies show that AI-2 binding causes a major conformational change within LuxP, which in turn stabilizes a quaternary arrangement in which two LuxPQ monomers are asymmetrically associated.

A negative feedback loop involving small RNAs accelerates Vibrio cholerae's transition out of quorum-sensing mode
Article Abstract:
The occurrence of the post-transcriptional repression of hapR via the quorum regulatory RNAS (Qrr) small RNA (sRNA) feedback loop at the transition from high to low cell density conditions is discussed. Findings reveal that the feedback loop is responsible for the dramatic acceleration of the transition of Vibrio cholerae cells out of social mode and into individual cell mode.

The small RNA chaperone Hfq and multiple small RNAs control quorum sensing in Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio cholerae
Article Abstract:
The Hfq protein acts as a mediator for destabilizing the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) encoding the quorum-sensing master regulators in Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio cholerae. The Hfq in combination with small, regulatory ribonucleic acid (sRNA) helps in creating an ultrasensitive regulatory switch that will control the transition to a quorum-sensing mode.
