Northwest Air, strikebound, lays off staff
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines, which has been hit by a four-day old strike by its 6,000 pilots, began a series of layoffs by sending home 175 flight dispatchers and meteorologists. The National Mediation Board has been urged by Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater to bring together Northwest and the Air Pilots Association to settle the labor dispute. Industry analysts said that the dispute hinges on the issues of compensation and job security. Northwest has cancelled 1,700 domestic flights and all international flights as a result of the strike.
