A government energy agenda: whole-life energy use and the potential of wind energy were debated recently at the ICE to inform future government policy
Article Abstract:
The Institution of Civil Engineers set up a debate to explore the idea of whole-life energy rating. Services engineer Terry Wyatt spoke of the way fuel could destroy the environmental and ecological balance of the world. Paul Davidson of the BRE claimed that the existing built environment is a cause for concern. The view that wind generation could contribute 10% of national electricity requirements was commonly held, and that there is a lack of urgency to conserve energy.

Home isn't where the health is
Article Abstract:
The UK government is investing 1 million pounds sterling in research into designing healthier homes via use of building regulations. The increase in diseases, such as asthma, has prompted architects to use products which may deter bacteria breeding, while designing structures which reduce the spread of allergens by ventilation. Building regulations need to be stricter to ensure houses are sufficiently airtight to prevent the spread of allergens which cause asthma.

Getting energy 1998: A New Year manifesto on architects' role in reducing energy consumption, requiring design skills and life-cycle understanding of energy flows
Article Abstract:
The current concern is that energy supplies are too plentiful and could eventually render the planet virtually uninhabitable, whereas 20 years ago there was concern that energy supplies would be exhausted. It is important for the future, to achieve energy conservation in buildings, by looking at the nature of the building fabric and by considering straightforward control systems and efficient use of space.
