Catalonia has been an autonomous region within Spain since 1979, and business is done in the Catalonian language. Catalonian leader Jordi Pujol just won a fourth term in office and a clear majority for his coalition, giving him much clout with the national government.

Pujol enjoys more influence than ever, due to the key position his 17 Catalonian Nationalist Party seats play in solidifying the Socialist government. The economic power of Catalonia, plus his political skills, should provide him a power base for years to come.

The rivalry between Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, and Spain capital city of the nation, goes back to the 9th century. Today both cities are bustling but stereotypes are hard to stop. The rivalry will probably continue for a long while more.
