LOW-WEIGHT BABIES BLOT PRETTY HEALTH SCENE IN KERALA
Article Abstract:
Kerala's health and social welfare indices have been marred by increase in the number of low birth weight (LBW) babies born in the state. Babies with a birth weight of less than 2.5 kg are considered as LBW babies. Every fourth child in Kerala is a LBW baby. The low birth weight is attributed to low energy intake by pregnant women in Kerala. The infant mortality rate in Kerala has declined from 120 per 1,000 births in 1957 to 10 deaths per 1,000 at present. Kerala's child mortality rate is five per 1,000 compared to the national mortality rate of 25-30 per 1,000 for children below five years. (gsh)
