Mac attack on volume housing
Article Abstract:
The president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Richard MacCormac, has criticised the quality of large-scale housing developments in Britain. MacCormac was presenting the 1992 Housing Project Design Awards to 13 housing developments that are currently under construction. However, he expressed disappointment that the financial framework set by the government meant that housing associations are forced to pay less attention to design quality. The British people tend to see housing as a necessity and are given little opportunity to choose well-designed homes.

Attack on plans for urban agency
Article Abstract:
There is criticism of the government's plan to set up an Urban Regeneration Agency (URA). The government propose setting up the URA in 1993 incorporating English Estates and taking over the Derelict Land Grant and City Grant programmes. It will have a budget of 250 million pounds sterling and work alongside the City Challenge programme. Critics believe the URA will not tackle social regeneration and is being imposed from above without the input of the local community. Regeneration is being confused with development.
