Article Abstract:
Mobile Telephone Networks Uganda (MTN Uganda) has been awarded a licence to operate a fixed and mobile telephone network in Uganda. This second national operator is controlled by Mobile Telephone Networks Limited of South Africa which has associated with Swedish Telia and local partners from Uganda and Rwanda. MTN Uganda has set aside US$ 5.8mn to get the licence and it has committed to invest an additional US$ 60mn in the next five years to install some 89,000 new telephone lines. Uganda reports 5,000 cellular telephone subscribers and 52,000 fixed telephone lines.

The Hidroel ctrica company which operated the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric power station is going to sell its electricity to the South African company Eskom for a price of R 0.04 per kilowatt hours from 1 to 31 December 1998, compared with R 0.02 at present. From 1 January 1999 to 31 December 1999, the price will rise from R 0.04 per kilowatt hour. After this date, the new rates are expected to be indexed according the South African price index.

Beltekhexport, the Belarus state company that holds a monopoly on military exportations, has refused to confirm or deny the existence of a contract between Algeria and Belarus in which Belarus will sell 36 of its MIG 29 aircraft to Algeria between August 1998 and March 2000. The 36 aircraft will be taken from the military base of Bereza, near Minsk and serviced in a Belarus factory before going to Algeria.
